An older man standing in an art gallery next to a large mixed-media artwork on the wall, a decorative ceramic vase with blue glaze and textured surface, and a large artistic bowl with abstract designs on a table.

Schlappal’s three-dimensional works explore the vessel as both form and idea — examining how surface, mark-making, and spatial relationships create their own visual language. His practice bridges craft and architecture, inviting viewers to experience the subtle dialogue between structure and surface.

On view are ceramic and free-standing forms, sculptural bowls, and mixed media wall works. Each ceramic piece is meticulously hand-built or wheel-thrown, finished with rich layers of underglazes, glazes, and lusters, and fired multiple times to achieve their distinctive patina. The wall sculptures, composed of luan plywood and pine, are painted, sanded, and sealed — revealing depth through texture and process.

A distinguished artist and educator, Gary Schlappal has taught at Kent State University, Iowa State University, the University of Wisconsin, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His many honors include 13 state and university grants and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
